FROM THE DIRECTOR
It has always been my dream to get my hands on CHICAGO - this is an iconic piece of musical theatre that is on many performers bucket lists for life. These lucky students get to tick it off so early in their careers! We have worked tirelessly in the rehearsal room to build a production that has our own stamp on it. It was my goal to make sure that our presentation of CHICAGO is not just a carbon copy of what’s been playing on Broadway for decades, but instead is filled with the experience and spirit of the performers you see before you.
It is always a privilege to spend time with the up and coming musical theatre stars of tomorrow. This group has inspired me throughout rehearsals with their professionalism and hunger for knowledge. I think this show will have a lasting impact on all of us because of the energy and memories we created building this world together. A very big thank you to Tim and all of the staff at Brisbane Academy of Musical Theatre for welcoming me into the team and allowing me to sprinkle my weird little magic all over the place.
I encourage you to eyeball every single performer while you watch this show… every single face you see before you represents ideas, colours, thoughts and talents poured generously into this production. I hope you, our beautiful audience, can let yourself be swept into our 1920s Jazz Den and be fully invested in the stories these characters have to tell. This is a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery -- all those things we all hold near and dear to our hearts. Thank you.
Maureen Bowra
FROM THE PRODUCER
It's always inspiring to see the next generation of performers applying their creativity to familiar works, to see how their fresh perspective shapes the telling of stories we have long told. Seeing our BAMT students tackle CHICAGO has been a really heartening experience, watching them bloom under the remarkable creativity and leadership of their captain, Maureen. Under Maureen's guidance they have crafted a really unique telling of CHICAGO that surprises and delights, and I am personally so grateful to Maureen for sharing her time, energy and unstoppable sparkle with this talented group. The whole team around Maureen - Dennett, JT, Wes, Rhys, Juliette, Brie, Ella & Ella - have guided our students with such grace and kindness and together have crafted a show that we are all so proud of. What a great way to start this year's BAMT performance season!
We always say that BAMT is a place of great beginnings and I'm sure you will agree that what is on display in this production is the beginning of some remarkable careers in the entertainment industry.
Thank-you for coming to support the work that our team have put together. I hope you enjoy CHICAGO!
